MSc Business Analytics and Decision Sciences win ASDA Hackathon

Date

The Business Analytics and Decision Sciences postgraduate students (Gaurav Kumar, Mary Avelin, Ali A Khan, Didar Cherniyazova and Ahmad Ammash) from the University of Leeds - Business School competed and won first place in the ASDA hackathon which focused on various aspects of supply chain. They were faced with a problem statement of identifying additional approaches and open-source data to help reduce the violation of human rights in the bottom tiers of the supply chain.

“We were able to identify additional criteria that we thought might help pinpoint human rights violations in the supply chain like modern slavery, child labour, female representation in the organisation, and datasets to back our claim. We presented our findings through a simple analysis to the judging committee as we felt that it would resonate with the larger audience and be easily implementable. One unique thing about our team was that we didn’t have the concept of a single leader but allowed everyone to take charge in their area of expertise. A few take aways from this entire experience would be, first, not to be afraid of taking a different approach and trust your team, after all, you are only as strong as the people around you! We'd like to thank our professor, Dr. Sajid, for providing us with much-needed guidance and encouragement to tackle this problem  and to LIDA for organising such an event ”
